First Position

In ballet, the first position may seem simple at first glance to you, but it's actually the foundation for mastering technique. As you can see from the picture, there are about nineteen key elements of requirements for the "First position" from chin up, open chest, shoulder down, hips under, knees together, turn out feet and more. For young dancers, these concepts may start as isolated pieces, and over time, they learn to connect and coordinate each element to present a graceful position. Whether your goal is to become a professional or to carry a graceful posture, it takes years and decades to internalize these elements by practicing them repeatedly and consistently.

Mr. Yu always uses a marination analogy comparing ballet basic training.  Just as a quick marinate won’t bring out the true flavor in cooking, rushing through ballet basics doesn’t allow students to build the control, strength, and precision needed for more advanced steps. By studying the key elements of the first position, we aim for parents, students, and the school to share a mutual understanding of ballet’s foundational discipline. This will help us to create a collaborative environment, allowing our young dancers to grow their skills with patience, discipline and precision.
